“I watched the show and tears appeared in my eyes-why? I kept crying. Why? I couldn’t enjoy myself, I don’t think I ever can again,” were the words that greeted me when I went to meet with Hank the next afternoon. “I’m sorry.” Was all I could manage to say, I didn’t think my performance was that bad. “You’re sorry? I am speaking about Rodger! How could he turn on me? Why would he turn on me?””Rodger turn on you? What makes you say that?” I inquired. He didn’t do the numbers he was supposed to.
Huh? I was a little puzzled by his response. Oh, the” Maybe” number .”Oe told him to cut it. The show was running long.”
Alton and everyone involved with the show was questioned about what happened. None of us took much thought into it until that night when Hank cornered Sammy for not doing the number as a boy. Sammy was behind the dance floor bar setting up when Hank screamed at him for not doing the number the way he asked him to perform it. Hank took a waiters tray and Frisbeed the tray across the room. Oe warned Sammy to dunk. Sammy was just as angry as Hank.
Hank screamed at him and Sammy yelled back “If you were so concerned about the show you should have been here, besides I do this shit for no pay so don’t flip on me.” “What do you mean no pay? I give Rodger one hundred dollars a week for you guys.”
Rodger got paid? This was news to me. I listened and got a little angry. All these weeks I thought Rodger was opening his home to us out of the kindness of his heart, he was getting paid. Alton was summons that night also. The two of us explained that Oe wasn’t happy with the length of the show. Oe denied this and told us that if we continued to lie he would make our lives miserable. No Johnny Angel.
Talk about a rock and a hard place. Rodger came in and fought with Hank. Rodger wasn’t sure why Hank was being so angry with the show. Rodger had cut numbers before. Before there was a Terry.
"I'm back" Terry cackled,
Terry appeared in the doorway as Hank fired Rodger.
“I cannot have people in my shows that I do not trust.” He announced as he banished Rodger from the club.
Oe became super nice to me, "You know you deserve better than Johnny.Therewas this bartender who used to work here. He moved to Florida and is back now. He'd be perfect for you. His name is obby.
In hind sight Rodger was the lucky one, we had to stay on. Hank was a man of his word and we were not allowed to mention Rodger’s name ever again. Several times I had asked Hank to allow Rodger to return and it was always "Rodger who?"
Rodger encouraged us to continue doing the shows and that he would iron this mess out within a few weeks. A month later we were still waiting to have it ironed out.
Alton and I were used to Rodger and getting ready at Rodger's place. We didn’t have make-up never mind out-fits. Terry offered to make us dresses out of left over party table clothes. We were becoming the joke and Alton was not having any of it.
Till tomorrow, be kind
