Featherette's 10

The next morning Kenny Alton and I woke to what would become our biggest nightmare- make-up on the pillow cases. No matter how much we scrubbed our faces there was make-up on the pillow cases. Our eyes were glued shut with what remained of our eye lash glue and my nails still had the crazy glue that Rodger used to glue the fake nails on me. I had to use pliers to get them off and even then I was chipping away at the remains for days after. We woke up to phone calls from our friends telling us how great we were and that they never had a better time. They wanted to know when we were performing next; we told them flat out it was a onetime only thing. We laughed and encouraged them to tell us how great we were, even though we knew we were; the beginnings of an ego trip. We called Rodger and chatted with him about the show and the wonderful night and the limo! He was too much. “I knew last night was going to be special and I wanted it to be a special memory for you two.”
We agreed to meet at his place to go to the BBQ together. We decided with all the tips we made the night before, $120.00 each- in singles, we would buy an out-fit for the BBQ. We went to this small store in NYC on Christopher Street called “All American Boy”, does anyone remember that place? While browsing through the shirts these two cute guys went up to Kenny Alton and asked if he worked at Feathers, he said yes. They went on to say how they were at the club last night and had the greatest time! “There was this great drag trio doing the Andrew Sisters! They were GREAT!” I was floored. They left before we could tell them it was us. We were stars! For one night at least.
Being a part of Feathers in those days really did make you someone. I am not sure how or why, but people knew who you were. Many found us unapproachable in the bar, but would buy us drinks and chat with us outside the bar.
We got to Rodger’s apartment on the agreed upon time. Chris was there and told us he was sorry he missed the show, but heard from John how great we were. “John left with this guy and ended up not going home with him. He was having to good a time with you guys and the guy just wanted to go back to his place. John left him but didn’t know where you guys were.” Whether it was true or not, I don’t know but, I loved Chris for saying it.
We were the toast of the BBQ and posed for picture upon picture. Everyone wanted to know when we were going to perform next. We protested it was one night only, but I saw Rodger had a smirk on his face.
Till Tomorrow, Be kind
