Rodger had allowed Alton and I to get ready at his house several weeks after he was let go. Eventually Alton and I stopped going over. It was hard leaving Rodger behind while we went to the bar to perform. Hank had us doing the most ridiculous numbers. He tried to have us do a Featherette show without Rodger, but Alton and I got sick that week and Terry got to do a whole show by himself, it was good. Hank started to lose interest in the shows. All the customers wanted Rodger and even Hank knew how ridiculous he was being, firing someone because they didn’t do a musical number. Hank had introduced us to a world that none of us every thought to enter and now we were submerged and making the best of it.
Rodger old room mate Chris, was a bartender on Fire Island. Everyone said we could pass as brothers, he even dated Bill after I broke up with him. Chris got us hired to do a show on Fire Island! That was big time! Hank wouldn’t let us do a “Featherette Show” in another place. Rodger was furious and did the show anyway. Alton and I went out to Fire Island was watched. We were still making good money at the bar and couldn’t afford to lose it. They were having a drag contest the following week, a paid room for contestants and one hundred dollars. Chris guaranteed a win if we had three contestants. “It would be a shut out.” Well, Casper, Alton and I packed up the car and headed out the following week-end for the island. Just to have a room for free was worth it…
